In this post, I’ll walk you through what acute vs. chronic in homeopathy really means — and how to know which type of session fits what’s happening in your body right now.
When You’re Not Sure Where to Start
When new clients first reach out, one of the most common questions I hear is, “Do I need an acute session or a full chronic consultation?”
It’s a great question — and the answer depends on whether we’re supporting something sudden or a pattern that’s been around for a while.
Homeopathy meets you where you are — whether you’re moving through something sudden and short-lived, or working on symptoms that have been around for a while. Let’s look at what that means in simple terms.
What Is an Acute Case?
An acute case is short-term and clearly defined — like a sore throat, a sprained ankle, or a sudden cold.
Your body is giving an immediate signal that something’s off, and it often passes once your system finds its balance again.
During an acute session, the focus is on your current state:
• What are you feeling right now?
• How did it begin?
• What makes it better or worse?
• How does it feel in your body — sharp, burning, throbbing, or sore?
The goal is relief and support while your system completes its natural healing process.
Homeopathy can help your body recover more quickly and comfortably, supporting its natural healing response.
Examples:
Colds, flus, sore throats, ear infections, stomach upsets, food poisoning, fevers, allergic reactions, minor burns, cuts, bruises, sprains, teething or earaches in children, and emotional shocks or grief reactions after a sudden event.
Acute sessions are usually short, focused, and designed to help you feel better quickly. They don’t require a full intake or deep case review — just clear observation and a remedy that fits this moment.
For convenience, acute sessions can be done by phone, email, or a short Zoom call, allowing you to get support quickly when you need it most.
What Is a Chronic Case?
A chronic case involves symptoms that stick around — or ones that come and go but never fully resolve.
They might ease for a while, only to return under stress, fatigue, or a change of season.
These ongoing patterns often point to a deeper imbalance in the system — physical, emotional, or both.
In homeopathy, this is sometimes called constitutional care, because it’s a deep dive into you as a whole person — not just a diagnosis, but how your body expresses imbalance, how you experience it, and how it affects your daily life.
During a chronic consultation, we explore:
• Your full health and family history
• A comprehensive review of your body systems from head to toe — digestion, hormones, skin, sleep, circulation, immunity, and more — to see how everything connects
• How your body responds to stress, environment, and change
• What symptoms tend to return or never quite resolve
• How those experiences influence your energy, mood, and overall resilience
It’s a process of understanding your system’s unique patterns — the way your body communicates through both physical and emotional symptoms.
Examples:
Chronic skin conditions such as acne, eczema, or warts; hormonal and reproductive changes including PMS, perimenopause, or irregular cycles; urinary or digestive issues; recurring infections such as sinus, strep or yeast; chronic pain conditions like arthritis or fibromyalgia; fatigue and burnout; sleep issues; panic attacks and anxiety; trauma recovery; autoimmune conditions; cancer support; and behavioral or focus challenges in children such as ADHD.
Chronic care is where homeopathy shines — it helps strengthen your body’s natural resilience, both mentally and physically, supporting your return to balance, vitality, and a deeper sense of your old self again.
So… Which One Do You Need?
If you’ve been wondering where your situation fits, start by asking yourself a few simple questions:
For chronic patterns:
• Have these symptoms been around for more than a few weeks or months?
• Do they come and go but never fully go away?
• Do you notice they worsen with stress, fatigue, or hormonal changes?
• Have you “tried everything” but nothing seems to last?
• Are there emotional themes or repeating patterns that feel connected to your physical health?
• Does your sleep, digestion, or mood often feel off balance — even when you’re “doing everything right”?
• Do you simply feel not like yourself anymore?
If several of these sound familiar, a chronic (constitutional) consultation is the best place to begin.
For acute situations:
If what you’re experiencing is sudden, clear-cut, or caused by something recent — like an illness, injury, or reaction — an acute session can bring relief quickly and gently support your body’s natural healing.
Sometimes, clients begin with an acute concern and later realize there’s a deeper story ready to be healed — that’s a natural and beautiful evolution in homeopathy.
Session Options:
• Acute sessions can be done by phone, email, or short Zoom — designed for quick support when you need it most.
• Chronic sessions are offered in person or by Zoom, and both are equally effective for deep, ongoing care. The first session is typically two hours, allowing time for a full exploration of your health history, life patterns, and goals for healing.
Then you can expect a series of three or more 50-minute follow-ups, depending on progress and goals for care. We continue together for as long as your system needs support, until your main concerns have resolved and balance feels restored.
Whether your goal is to get over a cold, sleep better, manage chronic pain or stress more easily, or simply feel like yourself again, homeopathy offers a way to listen to what your body is asking for and help it return to balance.
If you’re unsure which session fits best, I’m happy to help you decide.
